Established in 1741

In 1741, the first year of the Kanpo era, the first OKUBO BUEMON established Misubu. Since then, we have proudly spread the majestic beauty of Kyo-Misu through traditional techniques ensuring an illustrious history.
Our clients include the Ise Jingu(Ise Shrine), the imperial court, Nishi Hongwanji, Chion-in, and other temples and shrines. In recent years, we have received custom orders of Misu in not only our standard size but any size. Our products are also available for Buddhist altars.

Traditional skills

Misu is luxury Sudare, which is a traditional bamboo blind. In the Heian period, it was used as a curtain for privacy in bedrooms, and also as a curtain between the sacred and the profane areas in temples and shrines, which is called Kekkai.
Misu became popular among general people in the Muromachi period; it is now used as interior decoration items.
We are happy to receive your original order based on your needs.

Careful handcraft

The first step to make Misu is selecting bamboo. We use high-quality sticky bamboo that is grown in Kyoto, which is known for its humid summer and cold winter. Then, we braid them based on the convex surface of the bamboo strips which are carefully selected one by one.
Next, Nishijin-ori cotton and gold brocade are decorated by knitting them on the edge of Misu. A tuft and a metal hook are attached to each part as the final step to finish our work. All of our works are done carefully by our hand.

Our wishes

Regardless of our company’s history as a long-established store, we most importantly cherish our customers by making and delivering every single product in a careful manner. Each item we make at Misu is imbued with hundreds of years of tradition and special skills passed down by master craftsmen.
